Fan Comments on the Netflix series, The Last Kingdom. February 7, 2023

 With the fifth and final season of the Netflix series, The Last Kingdom, available I am rewatching the other four in order to prepare. I am disappointed it is the last one, having read all thirteen of the books by Bernard Cornwell that it is based on, but then again, they are structured differently. Some of the things they did differently were probably to make Uhtred of Bebanburg a more likable protagonist. Honestly, I thought at first it would be confusing with all the people called lord, but they managed to make it clear who everyone was talking to, and sometimes characters who are close friends drop formality, something that was unlikely to happen in the Dark Ages. I like the way when it captions a particular location it shows what it was called at the time, and then transitions to how it is currently known, similar to what Cornwell does at the beginning of every book, by telling before he starts the story. Also, just for your information if you watch the show and have not read the books, in the latter Uhtred always says, Fate is Inexorable, not Destiny is All.

Those stories and Cornwell's Arthur trilogy, that also has an upcoming TV series coming, gave me ideas for names of characters in future books. Some of them are being used in the book I am currently writing, namely in the titular Primal Realm, where there are towns and countries similar to those in Saxon ruled England, and some, mainly where the Elves are from, are like the Celts. There will be different cultures represented in that world, and a story that takes place at Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland, but that is the future. I first must finish writing The Primal Realms, and if you are anticipating it, first you should read The Penitent Warrior.

  I have already written my own personal review of my latest novel, The Primal Realm, but this is a short blog about what the parallel world the title refers to is like. It is a primitive world where every animal that ever existed on Earth thrives. The land they see is partly desert and rainforest, which is why the people who live there call it the Desert Jungle. That includes extinct ones, such as dinosaurs. There also nomadic hunter tribes, similar to the Native Americans of the Great Plains and the Southwest, and a bit of the Inca, the Maya, and the Aztecs.  They mostly travel on horseback, but often employ dinosaurs and other large animals to assists them in agriculture and war. How Westerns influenced me. August 13, 2024

 Westerns are my dad's favorite kind of movie, and thus I grew up watching a lot of them. They had more of a grip on my brother, because when we were kids, he always wanted to play adventure games that took place in the western United States between the years 1865 to 1895. Though I liked Westerns, I more often wanted to play games that took place in the present, so I could use vehicles, and he we always argued about it. I tried compromising but he never agreed about anything. I already wrote a little about it, and though that also gave me inspiration for books, I will talk about how the Western genre inspired me.  Westerns are a good genre for visual storytelling and for contrasting characters, and for making the setting be practically a character. They can help you get to know the characters as the story progresses, and have characters discover humanity as they go.
