The Two Towers. February 28, 2023

All Lord of the Rings fans have a different opinion on their favorite entry in the saga, and mine is The Two Towers. There is a fair share of people who say that because of Gollum, but for me, it is Helm's Deep. I also like the way it helped us get to know the characters we met halfway through The Fellowship of the Ring better. It got to be where they were easier to distinguish, because it annoyed me when I was at the Tennessee Rehabilitation Center and had to repeatedly explain how Aragorn lived and Boromir died.

Nobody would forgive me if I don't mention Andy Serkis's performance as Gollum, because it was outstanding. I agree that it really should have been nominated for an Academy Award for best supporting actor. The only reason was they couldn't see Serkis act, but he was technically there with the animation over his performance. When I heard Lord of the Rings was being made into a movie, I thought Gollum would be a puppet/costume, and that Serkis would just provide the voice. When Peter Jackson found out about motion-capture and was determined to have an actual actor there to perform the part, and he did it great.

I can now talk about my favorite part of the saga. Like I said above, my favorite battle in the saga, and favorite literary and cinematic battle period was Helm's Deep. It was astounding the way, every time it looked like the Rohirrim defenders were repelling the Uruk-hai, more came. It was not until the cavalry charge when Gandalf arrived, that they finally had victory. It showed that my favorite character, Aragorn, was becoming more of a leader. My only complaint is that the enemy forces were only Uruk-hai, and no Morgul orcs, were wild men of Dunland, like in the book. I guess Jackson was trying to keep things simple, but nobody got confused with the addition of the Elves, and I also would have preferred if Eomer was there from the beginning like in the book. But those are only personal preferences, and they will likely be remedied in the upcoming anime film, Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim.
