Lindsay Buroker's Heritage of Power Series. June 29, 2023

 The main reason I started writing these blogs is because other authors suggested I should have my readers get to know me better. I also felt obligated to read books from fellow Smashwords authors. One of them was Lindsay Buroker, and I just finished her Heritage of Power series. Each book has the same level of action and suspense I incorporate into the Covert Militia Campaigns. It takes place in a fantasy world, mainly in a country called Iskandia, where dragons have been absent for some thousand years, but a porthole has been discovered to a world where they inhabit. They can also shapeshift into people and animals. There are also sentient swords, called soulblades, that possess the soul of a warrior or sorcerer from the past.

The way Telryn "Trip" Yert goes struggles with the prospect of being a pilot that built stuff or a sorcerer was gripping, the same way I am trying to make people relate to Jack Stamper struggling with Asperger syndrome, while being a general in a secret militia, when all he really wants to do is play alternative metal music. Rysha Ravenwood's triumph in being Iskandia's first elite female soldier was also engaging. Lindsay gave it a similar since of humor I am using in the Militia's Campaigns. My favorite moments was when the female dragon, who made Rysha her rider, shifted into her human form, which was only a teenage girl, and rode a scooter through a castle's solarium. Trip and Rysha had to stop the guards from shooting her. Later, while Trip was at an inquest, the soulblades made the pants on a soldier watching Trip fall down. What The Primal Realm is like. April 9, 2024

  I have already written my own personal review of my latest novel, The Primal Realm, but this is a short blog about what the parallel world the title refers to is like. It is a primitive world where every animal that ever existed on Earth thrives. The land they see is partly desert and rainforest, which is why the people who live there call it the Desert Jungle. That includes extinct ones, such as dinosaurs. There also nomadic hunter tribes, similar to the Native Americans of the Great Plains and the Southwest, and a bit of the Inca, the Maya, and the Aztecs.  They mostly travel on horseback, but often employ dinosaurs and other large animals to assists them in agriculture and war. As a means of avoiding the Covert Militia going into White Savior territory, there are also feudal kingdoms. The first one they journey to is called Eoforham and its principal city is called Edmont. How Westerns influenced me. August 13, 2024

 Westerns are my dad's favorite kind of movie, and thus I grew up watching a lot of them. They had more of a grip on my brother, because when we were kids, he always wanted to play adventure games that took place in the western United States between the years 1865 to 1895. Though I liked Westerns, I more often wanted to play games that took place in the present, so I could use vehicles, and he we always argued about it. I tried compromising but he never agreed about anything. I already wrote a little about it, and though that also gave me inspiration for books, I will talk about how the Western genre inspired me.  Westerns are a good genre for visual storytelling and for contrasting characters, and for making the setting be practically a character. They can help you get to know the characters as the story progresses, and have characters discover humanity as they go.
