His Dark Materials January 22, 2024
Some TV shows, usually ones that have less than five seasons, are not often talked about. That does not mean they are bad, and one such show for me was the HBO series, His Dark Materials. Based on the book series by Philip Pullman, that I did not read, it is the second attempt to bring his work to the media. The first was in 2007, with a feature length film, based on the first book in the series, The Golden Compass. The only thing praised was the visuals, because it tried cramming in too much story and characters. It was also lambasted by the Catholic Church, and I will not get into that. The first season was almost identical to the movie, but as it progressed it started showing things that were left out or were in the other books in the series. The only things that annoyed me was the Gysptians were only in the first season, and did not come back, and my favorite character, Lee Scoresby died, despite briefly appearing again. Every season, it seemed like a different series, but I don't mean that in a bad way. I will not go into spoiler territory, but the end of the series, it implies that Lyra Belaqua and Will Perry will see each other again, and I would welcome that. I would also welcome a series centered on Lee Scoresby, because Pullman did write a novella about one of Lee's adventures. All the same, I write books that I would love to have more media, but for now I just write them like I already am a bestseller, and if you are interested in reading my work and the work of many other independent authors, click on the link.
