Transformers: One September 30, 2024

Though G.I. Joe was my favorite toys as a kid, I also always liked Transformers, and the new movie was fun, telling of Optimus Prime and Megatron when they were young and could not transform yet. It told how Optimus's optimism caused trouble but was for a good cause, which was acknowledged at the end, while Megatron succumbed to his rage and became the very thing he was trying to stop. It was more than meets the eyes which is their tagline, and it was obviously somebody's passion project. Speak No Evil September 23, 2024

Image
Speak No Evil was like a lot of horror movies, now whether gritty or with a sense of humor, where rich people are invited to spend a weekend with them, but they have an agenda. This time they had a phony son they were abusive to and would not allow to talk, when they really cut out his tongue so he could not warn their victims. They used their compassion against them, to lure them back, and eventually escape. I do not have a problem with that, but you also need to be unique with them and try using something personal. One thing that was used as a personal touch to the story was the victim family's daughter had a stuffed rabbit, she was really attached to which they used to lure them back. Her father said she was too old for it, not realizing it was difficult for her to let it go, it was like having Asperger syndrome, and they get sentimental and like to hold on to them, the way I held onto my action figures.  It is possible to use toys you cherish as a child for creative reaso...

The Killer's Game September 17, 2024

A lot of people did not seem to like The Killer's Game, seeing it as a generic action thriller, but I like a fun action thriller, and enjoyed it. There was effort put into it, with Dave Bautista's character falling in love with a ballet dancer, and finding out he has a terminal illness, only for it to be a mix up. The real depth was when they were trying to tell each other what they did not know happened, and when they tried to atone for it. If critics did not like it, maybe they will soften with time.  It was based on a book I have not read, so I cannot compare and contrast, but if you are interested in my work, click on the link to find the work of many independent authors.  Smawhwords.com

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice September 9, 2024

Image
I know the classic original Beetlejuice is nostalgia for a lot of people, but for me seeing it once was enough, and I did not watch the cartoon series much. I always found the first one just OK, and I feel that way about the sequel. There were a few moments when I laughed pretty hard, and I liked the character Willem Defoe played. It was interesting seeing a little of Beetlejuice's backstory. On the other hand, I think it probably would have been better if it was made in 1991, while the cartoon series was still on the air. Making sequels after ten years, just feels like a cash grab and fan service, but that does not mean it automatically makes the movie bad. It takes real effort to make a movie good, and sometimes it does work. Even so, I did not hate that movie, the same way I did not hate the first one. The Sand Sea by Michael McClellan September 2, 2024

Image
One of the first books I saw advertised on social media, was Michael McClellan's The Sand Sea. It was an obvious send up to the classic adventure stories of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It tells of an expedition to a great desert an in alternative version of 1879. The expedition is a cover for a quest to find the Staff of The Lion, The Ram, and The Serpent. It is connected to a prophecy in which a foreigner from across the sea will restore balance and bring about the downfall of the Qallifa. Selena Savanar was taken from her family as a child and is now hunted by the Qallifa's Grand Vizer, Jemojeen Jongdar. Peter Harmon is drawn to Harold Milton Stanwich's expedition to find the oasis where a piece of the Staff was last known to be seen and is eventually swept into a war between the Qaliffa and the free people of the Sand Sea. There is a hint at a sequel near the end, and I look forward to reading it. The characters are not very unique, Peter is an in...
