Disney's Haunted Mansion. July 30, 2023

Image
I only went to Disney World in Orlando twice. I do not remember ever going on the Haunted Mansion ride. I did, however, find the new movie about quite entertaining, especially by the midway point. The way the scientist encouraged Owen Wilson's character he still had potential to be a minister, was the only touching part. From what I can tell, the people who made the movie, really enjoyed the ride. Writing stuff about things you enjoy, is one of the most creative things you can do, and that is what most of my books are about . Oppenheimer. July 24, 2023

Image
I could tell from the trailers that Oppenheimer would not be as action oriented as a lot of Christopher Nolan's other films, such as his Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, and Tenet. That is likely because it is based on true events. It was still a compelling story, and Cillian Murphy gave a good performance in the title role. It did not really get going until Matt Damon appeared, and they started building the test area in the New Mexico desert. The only downside was it was long and slow paced, making it hard to stay awake, but that does not mean it was bad.  I will also talk briefly about the Barbenheaimer phenomenon. I think that was a good way to compromise when two movies that are likely to be blockbusters premier the same weekend. Even so, the main reason was I didn't play with Barbies as a kid, as you would expect. After all I was a G.I. Joe, Transformers, Ninja Turtles, X-Men, Batman, fan, and playing with them is what inspired my writing. I have respect for people who ma...

Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning-Part 1 July 16, 2003

Image
Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning-Part 1, was a thrilling adventure. I already mentioned how they got a reputation for being good, with thrilling action, well acting, and gripping stories. The opening fight in the desert, and the way Ethan Hunt disguised himself to incapacitate government officials was entertaining. The fight in the desert was fun, and any action scene that involves a train is always fun. I liked how they were subtle about the sequel coming next summer, and I am sure it will be fun. As to whether or not this will be the last time Tom Cruise plays Ethan Hunt, that remains to be seen. After all, though I enjoy seeing him play Ethan, especially due to the character's name, I never see him play a character. And that said, Cruise would be a good actor if he would play somebody that is not himself. All in all, it was a fun movie.

Thoughts on the Mission: Impossible film series. July 10, 2023

Image
As everyone has pointed out, the Mission: Impossible movies, have gotten a reputation for being good, despite getting off to an awkward start. I did not watch the original TV series, but when I saw the trailers for the movies, I was somewhat familiar with it, having heard the theme music before. While the first one confused people and made one of the show's heroes a traitor. The second one, was thrilling when it first came out, but is now dated in terms of story but the action scenes are still entertaining. The third one underused a good villain, making it forgettable. But starting with the fourth one, they started to have gripping stories, likable characters, and unique action sequences. The only thing I feel weird about is there is something about Tom Cruise that creeps me out. He has been in entertaining movies and can be a good actor when he doesn't play himself and that is all I will say. The thing I like about him though is the name of his character is Ethan Hunt, and I...

Live Free or Die Hard's attempts to be a Fourth of July movie. July 3, 2023

Image
Though Die Hard is my favorite Christmas movie, despite the arguments, I will talk about it when it is closer to the holiday. Right now, I would like to talk about how I appreciate its third sequel, Live Free or Die Hard tried being a Fourth of July movie. It premiered shortly before the Fourth of July in 2007, and despite being PG-13 I still had fun watching it, albeit I usually watch the unrated version, usually every Fourth of July. The action was still rousing, and John McClane still had the sense of humor he had in the first ones. Justin Long made a good sidekick, in Matthew Ferrell, giving some good comic levity. He did overcome his griping and whining and help out in the end, by finishing one of the henchmen. Timothy Oliphant was a good villain as Thomas Gabriel, but it can't beat the late Alan Rickman as Hans Gruber. I always laugh at the joke when John and Matthew get in an argument about hearing Creedence Clearwater Revival. The only thing that disappoints me about it bei...

Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny, a passable finale. July 2, 2023

Image
Though The Last Crusade is still my favorite Indiana Jones movie, and it should have been the last one, The Dial of Destiny was a good enough ending. It was most fun, when it actually was an Indiana Jones movie. The opening fight with the Nazis on the train, was on par with the first trilogy. Mads Mikkelson and Boyd Hollbrook were fun villains. The only thing I could go without was the end when the Nazis sent Indy and company back in time to Ancient Rome. It was still entertaining, however, and I am glad I saw it. That said, the main reason is that series was an influence on my writing, and with me giving my latest book away in Smashwords's 15 Annual Summer Winter Sale, and if you are interested, click on the link.  Smashwords.com
